Mantenere alto il morale e resistere al senso d'impotenza è una sfida quotidiana di fronte ai continui bombardamenti e al genocidio in corso nella Striscia di Gaza. Alla fine di maggio, nonostante tutto, la gente è ancora scesa in strada per manifestare. Oggi, con tante questioni irrisolte, tra cui la repressione interna, la fatica e lo scoraggiamento iniziano a farsi sentire. Il grande manifesto nella seconda foto è un appello al boicottaggio, una delle poche armi rimaste a disposizione di coloro che cercano di fare pressione e di opporsi a ciò che sta accadendo.

Maintaining high morale and resisting the sense of helplessness is a daily challenge in the face of the ongoing bombardment and genocide in the Gaza Strip. At the end of May, despite everything, people still took to the streets to demonstrate. Today, with so many unresolved issues, including internal repression, fatigue and discouragement are beginning to set in. The large poster in the second photo is a call for a boycott, one of the few remaining weapons available to those trying to lobby and oppose what is happening.

Quando mi chiedono perché vivo a Tunisi, rispondo scherzosamente che è anche un po' colpa loro. Dopo gli attentati del 2015, le navi da crociera hanno evitato il paese, e Cagliari è diventata una nuova destinazione. I cambiamenti che la città ha subito, in parte a causa del turismo e della gentrificazione, mi hanno spinto ad andarmene. La seconda immagine mostra il TGM (Tunisi-La Goletta-La Marsa), un treno che collega il centro di Tunisi a La Marsa. La linea ferroviaria è la prima in Tunisia. Prima del protettorato francese, fu rimodernata dalla Società di Navigazione Rubattino di Genova, che gestiva anche la linea marittima Genova-Cagliari-Tunisi dal 1851. Oggi, sebbene funzionante, la linea ha bisogno di essere aggiornata e viaggiare su di essa è una sfida quotidiana per molti tunisini.

Quand les gens me demandent pourquoi je vis à Tunis, je leur réponds en plaisantant que c'est aussi un peu de leur faute. Après les attentats de 2015, les bateaux de croisière ont évité le pays et Cagliari est devenue une nouvelle destination. Les changements que la ville a connus, en partie dus au tourisme et à la gentrification, m'ont incité à partir. La deuxième photo montre le TGM (Tunis-La Goletta-La Marsa), un train qui relie le centre de Tunis à La Marsa. Cette ligne ferroviaire est la première en Tunisie. Avant le protectorat français, elle a été modernisée par la Società di Navigazione Rubattino de Gênes, qui exploitait également la ligne maritime Gênes-Cagliari-Tunis à partir de 1851. Aujourd'hui, bien que fonctionnelle, la ligne a besoin d'être modernisée et voyager sur cette ligne est une épreuve quotidienne pour de nombreux Tunisiens.

When people ask me why I live in Tunis, I jokingly reply that it is also a bit their fault. After the 2015 attacks, cruise ships avoided the country, and Cagliari became a new destination. The changes the city has undergone, partly due to tourism and gentrification, prompted me to leave. The second picture shows the TGM (Tunis-La Goletta-La Marsa), a train connecting the centre of Tunis to La Marsa. The railway line is the first in Tunisia. Before the French protectorate, it was modernised by the Società di Navigazione Rubattino of Genoa, which also operated the Genoa-Cagliari-Tunis maritime line from 1851. Today, although functional, the line is in need of updating and travelling on it is a daily challenge for many Tunisians.

Pannelli e gigantografie promettono l'ascensione sociale grazie l'istruzione. Le università canadesi, statunitensi, francesi, e Italiane...; Delle agenzie private promettono di facilitare l'emigrazione: la burocrazia, lo studio della lingua. È uno dei modi in cui il Sud si svuota. Dall'altra parte della strada un pannello scritto con caratteri di altri tempi ci racconta la lunga storia degli spostamenti nel mediterraneo. La società ha chiuso da alcuni anni, e sarebbe interessante ricostruire la storia familiare dietro quel cognome.

Universités canadiennes, américaines, françaises, italiennes... ; des agences privées promettent de faciliter l'émigration : bureaucratie, étude des langues. C'est l'une des façons dont le Sud se vide. De l'autre côté de la rue, un panneau écrit en caractères démodés nous raconte la longue histoire de l'émigration dans la Méditerranée. L'entreprise a fermé ses portes il y a quelques années, et il serait intéressant de reconstituer l'histoire familiale derrière ce nom de famille.

Panels and billboards promise social ascension through education. Canadian, American, French, and Italian universities…; private agencies promise to facilitate emigration: bureaucracy, and language study. It is one of the ways in which the South empties. Across the street, a panel written in old-fashioned characters tells us the long history of emigration through the Mediterranean. The company closed down a few years ago, and it would be interesting to reconstruct the family history behind that surname.
